Family History
These are the ties that bind us all together and make us one inseparable family: Sutton Jones married Chloe (maiden name unknown), and from this union 17 children were born. We have the names of 13 of those children. They were: Hannah, Easter, Dinnah, Eliza, Hollen, Mary, Phebe, Jack, George, Abram, Sutton Jr. Simon and Lauden. Our lineage to Sutton and Chloe is through one of those 17 children. During a certain period of time, the families who had to go 'down river' meant they would be sold in the slave states along the Mississippi river. The Slaves in North Carolina were not only horrified by the thought of being separated from family and loved ones when sold, but also the fear of being sold and taken to the deep south. William Jones had to sell some of his slaves to keep his land and home out of foreclosure. He sold Sutton, Chloe, and all their children to a man named Tommy Squires. This was a traumatic experience for Sutton and his family. Sutton, his wife and children must have been treated relatively well because some of them took the name Squires. Three of Sutton's boys were mustered into the U.S. Army under the name Squires. It is possible that the person who mustered them into the Army asked them where they were from and they told him the Squires Plantation. They put Squires on all of their papers, but all of their children had the Jones surname. The reason the family identifies to two surnames is because two people owned them a Jones and a Squires. By the time Sutton and Chloe were free, they were 53 years old. However, Sutton and Chloe lived 41 and 40 more years respectively. God blessed them both with a long life, and they spent their years of freedom living among their children. The Hargrove name is carried because one of Sutton's daughters, Eliza, married Henry Hargrove, and their descendants started having an annual Reunion. Samuel Cox, a grandson of Uncle Henry and Aunt Eliza, suggested to the group that they include the Jones-Squires side of their family in the annual reunion. | |||
